A mixed-use development in the heart of the Tweed

Updated: Feb 3, 2021

A long-term client of Lightwave’s commissioned us to design a mixed-use Commercial/ Residential Development in a prime location in Tweed Head’s busy Wharf Street, an area rich with commercial activities, public utilities, schools and community infrastructure, just a few meters beyond the Nsw/Qld State Border with recreational opportunities along the Tweed River foreshore & nearby Coolangatta Beach.

The proposed building features Retail tenancies wrapping around the ground level of the main frontage, 2 storeys of above ground carpark and 7 storeys of 1/2/3 Bedroom Apartments. Private and Communal Open Space is the strong point of the overall design. Each unit features a deep balcony. Communal Open Spaces occur on the 2nd and 8th (top) level; these have been conceived as a recreational zone with active and passive spaces through the provision of dining areas, seating zones and open lawn areas.

The spaces are designed for entertaining and quiet contemplation. The hard mix of timber decking, artificial turf and tiles defines spaces and provides an element of contemporary design to the ground plane. Seating opportunities are provided with the introduction of linear bench seating throughout the spaces.

Deep landscaping on the top level allows to have a visually appealing effect on the streetfront of this contemporary Architectural composition, together with the use of rendered extruded awnings and the alternate use of solid and glazed balustrades.
