Wings Community Miami

Wings Communities is a specialised respite centre designed to empower young adults with intellectual disabilities. Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment where they can thrive, grow, and prepare for a life filled with dignity and independence. In collaboration with Wings' visionary founder, an accomplished entrepreneur with a background in hospitality and accommodation, Lightwave embarked on a journey to create a unique and world-class facility.

Understanding the distinct needs of the future residents was at the core of our design process. Through close collaboration and deep engagement with the future users, our design team gained invaluable insights that guided the creation of a facility that truly caters to their aspirations. The project encompasses 15 small, self-contained apartments, thoughtfully arranged around a central grassed courtyard—a space designed to foster a sense of community and togetherness.

Our approach went beyond addressing mobility concerns, as we recognised that playfulness, modernity, and community were essential factors in promoting a fulfilling and enriching living experience. While local and federal legislation often emphasises mobility, our collaboration with the user group highlighted the importance of these other dimensions. This user-centred approach ensures that the design embodies the true spirit and aspirations of Wings' residents.

Although the project was conceived and designed before the release of the NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation Design Standard, Lightwave, in consultation with specialist consultants, has incorporated minor design adjustments to ensure compliance with the upcoming standards, set to take effect in mid-2021. This commitment to regulatory compliance ensures that Wings Community remains at the forefront of providing cutting-edge, inclusive, and future-proofed accommodation for its residents.
