A North Queensland Cattle Country inspired Retirement Living Community

The Odyssey Private Aged Care Group provide accommodation and care services to elderly people. The group’s business specialises in the “ageing in place” philosophy. Ageing in place means that generally residents will move into an Odyssey community and live independently in self-contained units. Additional care and support is provided to them on an “as needs” basis, from simple assistance washing clothes to full palliative care.

Odyssey Private Aged Care operate around a central facility known as the Leisure Centre. This building accommodates all support services including nurses, administration, carers and maintenance. It is also the primary social hub of the project where residents gather for meals and social activities.

All units are required to have covered access to the leisure centre. The majority of the buildings have a northerly orientation and this sets the basic planning regime for the site. The ability to locate the buildings facing north-east makes a significant contribution to the passive design outcomes can reduce energy consumption by 30%.

Architectural response achieves a high degree of building breakup. Visually the buildings are identifiable individually by using different feature colours. Individual balconies are also identifiable from the landscaped gardens by using different colours. Large overhangs to roof elements and awnings and screens protect the buildings and residents from the elements while providing a distinct North Queensland feel to the environment.
